But what for me was gain,
this I considered loss for Christ's sake. Philippians 3: 7
Years ago, when Romania was
under the control of communism, Bela Karolyi was a fitness trainer. He
skillfully developed the talents of stars, such as gold medalist Nadia
Comaneci. As a reward for his success in training athletes who brought fame to
the country, he received a very expensive car and many other favors. But
Karolyi wanted freedom. So one day, carrying only a small suitcase, he left
Romania resolutely for freedom without a cent.
Following Jesus and
experiencing the freedom He gives also requires a cost. When the fishermen
Peter and Andrew heard the call of Jesus: "... Come after me, and I will
make you fishers of men. Then they left [...] their nets and followed him
"(Matthew 4: 19,20). Similarly, James and John left their father and their
profession to begin a precarious life of discipleship. They knew the cost of
this and preferred to follow Jesus, leaving everything behind (vv.21,22).
What an example for all of
us who claim to be disciples of Jesus! He said, "And whoever does not take
up his cross and come after me can not be my disciple" (Luke 14:27). Are
we willing to make sacrifices-big or small-for our Lord's sake? Let us respond
to the Savior's invitation: "Come after me," not only through words
but acts.
When
we follow Jesus, everything in life changes direction.
